A lecture on “Women in Art & Women Artists” will be presented by the Speakers Bureau of the Newark Museum at the Summit Library on May 18 at 7:30 p.m.

This slide presentation looks at the way women were portrayed in art from Egyptian times up until the Gilded Age, when art was mostly created by men. It then follows the rise of women artists, using examples of their work from the museum’s collections.

Joanne Petuchovas studied Fine Arts Education, but began her career in commercial art when everything was still done by hand (pre-computers). She eventually switched careers to Special Education. In all aspects of her personal and working life, she utilized her creativity and artistic skills to enhance her lessons and student experiences.

Now retired, she has been able to concentrate on her love for photography and creating with paper. Iris paper folding, tea bag folding, and collage are some of the techniques used on her unique note cards. Use of color, pattern, texture, embellishments, vintage ephemera and other “found” materials enhance her designs. Her photography began with a focus on flowers, but has grown to include a variety of subjects.
